Natural Skin Care: Homemade Face Masks, Toothpaste, Natural Skin Care

Dec 30, 2020

In this series, you’ll learn how to make your own DIY facials, toothpaste, deodorant, and our daily cleansing routine. You’ll also learn how to make a detox bath, dry skin brush, oil pull to keep you cleansed from the inside out.

Non-Toxic Skin Care

You’ve likely heard how toxic most skincare products are – from foaming cleansers, creams, make-up, the worst – lipstick! We absorb a lot of the personal care products we put in our mouths and on our skin and hair.

Safe Ingredients

Did you know many commonly used chemical ingredients in skincare products are never even tested for safety? Shocking, right?

Even worse, the FDA doesn’t have the authority to ban skincare ingredients that show strong evidence of being dangerous or deadly. Talcum powder is the perfect example. (1)

Products that contain talc (a.k.a. talcum powder) include makeup and baby powder. Talcum powder is frequently contaminated with cancer-causing asbestos and recent court proceedings have found that one major company knew this for decades. Millions have already been paid in damages from lawsuits where people got cancer or died because of this. The lawsuits just keep rolling in (so far there are over 15,000 lawsuits!).

It’s obvious the item should be pulled from shelves, right? Nope. Baby powder is still being sold in stores, still being sprinkled on baby’s genitals, and still causing harm for some. The FDA and government oversight agencies usually don’t pull the plug on toxins in skin care. (1)

Along with avoiding regular skincare products for their chemical load, we also notice using natural products makes our skin glow from the inside out! It wasn’t until Katelyn changed to an oil-based, natural cleanser that she really became free from painful breakouts and uneven skin tone.

So we invite you to look at some of the ingredients in your current skincare products. Besides reading labels, one of the best resources we have found to evaluate the safety of products is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database. Each product is given a score based on the ingredients it contains. It’s a super-easy way to figure out if the products you are using on yourself and your children are safe. Do a quick google search on the ingredients and see what you find. Slowly start switching over to natural products like the ones we mention below.

In Part 1 of the series, we will be sharing some of our favorite homemade recipes and what natural products we love to support, usually small businesses, dedicated to the health of you and the Earth.

Homemade Toothpaste

  • ½ cup baking soda
  • 3 drops peppermint oil (or more)
  • ¼ cup virgin coconut oil
  • 1 tsp. Xylitol – optional

Mix together in a bowl then place in a small glass jar. Use in place of toothpaste, as it helps neutralize acids and bad bacteria in the mouth.

Face Masks – 1-2x per week

Each mask recipe uses bentonite clay as the main ingredient. Bentonite clay pulls toxins, chemicals, dead skin cells, and even heavy metals from the skin. Clay also provides oxygen to cells and has an alkalizing/balancing effect.

Inflammation/Acne/Blemish Soothing Mask:

  • 1 Tbsp. bentonite clay
  • 2-3 Tbsp. clean water, rose water, or tea (like chamomile, calendula, or nettles which have anti-inflammatory properties)
  • ½ tsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 4 drops tea tree essential oil
  • Optional: 1 Tbsp. raw honey for anti-microbial
  • Optional: 1 tsp. Aloe vera gel

Tightening/Glowing Skin Mask

  • 1 Tbsp. bentonite clay
  • 2-3 Tbsp. clean water, rose water, or tea (like chamomile, calendula, or nettles which have anti-inflammatory properties)
  • ½ tsp. Vitamin C powder (or liquid)
  • ¼ tsp. Matcha powder (tightening and antioxidant-rich)

Detoxifying Green Mask

  • 1 Tbsp. bentonite clay
  • 2-3 Tbsp. clean water, rose water, or tea (like chamomile, calendula, or nettles which have anti-inflammatory properties)
  • 1 tsp. Spirulina powder

Mask Instructions

  • Combine the ingredients in a small bowl. (Do not use a metal utensil or bowl when working with bentonite clay.)  Add in enough water to make a spreadable paste. Apply to the face for 10-15 minutes. To remove the mask, wash your face with warm water and a washcloth.
